I'm planning to thru-hike the AT next year (2006). One of my top priorities is ensuring adequate nutrition. Besides the obvious benefits of a good diet, I want to minimize weight loss. (At 5'10", 155 pounds, I can't afford to lose much.) I'd also prefer to make do without mail drops (or, if not possible, keep them to a minimum).

I prepared the following table because I could not find an overview (in the format I wanted) of places to get groceries on the AT. The information was pieced together from various sources, including the 2004 editions of the A.T. Data Book and the A.T. Thru-Hikers' Companion ( Data Book and Thru-Hikers' Companion, The Online Companion), and Jack Tarlin's excellent resupply article on Whiteblaze.net.

I am using it as a general planning tool and posting it in case others might find it helpful. It is, however, no substitute for an up-to-date trail guide. The table is limited to food resupply locations within five miles of the trail and does not contain any of the other invaluable information that trail guides provide (sources of groceries more than five miles from the trail, sources of water and stove fuel; available services, locations of shelters and accommodations, restaurants, and outfitters, etc.)

It should go without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that the information comes with no guarantee of accuracy. None of it is based upon my personal knowledge. In addition, it is dated and changes are constantly occurring. If you are aware of any omissions or inaccuracies, please let me know so I can make the necessary corrections.

NOTES:

The number in the left-hand column is the distance in miles between the sources of resupply appearing immediately above and below it to the right.

Only sources of groceries located within five miles of the trail are identified. I figured that was the maximum distance it would be reasonable to walk if one wanted leave the trail to resupply and be back on the trail the same day.

LT = source of long term resupply.

ST = source of short term resupply.
